Was haben Eibe, Krieg und Abholzung miteinander zu tun? Mehr als man denkt, denn während man heute mit Panzern und Hubschraubern in den Krieg zieht, benutzte man im Mittelalter meist Pfeil und Bogen. Und sei es, dass diese Bögen hauptsächlich aus Eibenholz hergestellt wurden.
Ein Langbogen aus Eibenholz machte im Mittelalter den Unterschied. Eibe ist das Holz schlechthin für die Herstellung von Handbögen. Das Kernholz lässt sich am besten zusammendrücken, während das Splintholz eine höhere Spannung aufweist. Diese Eigenschaften ermöglichten es den Menschen, mit diesen Langbögen weiter zu schießen als mit Bögen aus anderen Hölzern. Wegen der vielen Kriege, die geführt wurden (das war nie anders), gab es auch eine enorme Nachfrage nach Holz. In England verschwanden die Eibenwälder zusehends, und den Menschen ging das Holz aus. Deshalb wurde im 15. Jahrhundert beschlossen, dass die Einfuhrzölle in Form von Eibenholz bezahlt werden mussten. Aber auch auf dem Festland wurde das Taxusholz knapp.
Ganze Wälder wurden abgeholzt, und der Taxus-Bestand in Westeuropa erholte sich nie wieder. Zum Glück kann man aber etwas dagegen tun.
